SERIAL POSITION EFFECT
Serial position effect has a good relation to human memory by taking the long term and short term memory into account. In everyday designs, we need to be cognitively aware about serial position effect since it can affect the functionality of our designed products or interfaces.
Taking examples a list of words numbered from 1 to 20, studies have shown that human tends to remember well the first few items ( primacy effect ) and the last few ( recency effect ) but have difficulties remembering the items located in the middle of the list.
So, when designing, a designer need to emphasize the arrangement of their products' internal design to accommodate the occurrence of both primacy and recency effects in humans' memory.
Example: Warranty Card
Source: This picture was taken from the warranty card of our multicooker
Explanation:
The details of the warranty card is arranged in a way that important information are displayed by considering both the primacy and recency effect. The top part of the card displayed the serial number while the bottom of the card displayed the important notice or warnings.
